The Certified Master Mechanic will perform skilled mechanical and electrical repairs to park district vehicles and equipment. They will manage the shop workflow, will work independently, and travel between parks to perform job requirements as needed.
The successful candidate will perform the following:
Uses tools provided to perform skilled mechanical and electrical repairs to gasoline and diesel engines in vehicles, trucks, mowers, trucksters, tractors, and other equipment. Replaces mechanical parts, overhauls engines, repairs transmissions, repairs hydraulic controls and drive systems, installs water pumps, adjusts carburetors, and performs other repairs to maintain proper operating condition. Uses diagnostic tools in the repair of electrical systems and computer-controlled drive trains.
Discusses cost/benefit of repair versus replacement with appropriate Managers and Fleet Manager.
Diagnose malfunctions and determine proper repair methods within standard practice. Operates testing equipment to diagnose problems and validate repairs.
Performs service on Park Ranger vehicles, as well as emergency communications equipment and high-performance vehicle systems in emergency vehicles. Maintains and installs various law enforcement-related peripherals and equipment in Ranger vehicles.
Performs scheduled maintenance to vehicles and equipment: changes oil, replaces belts, lubricates moving parts, rotates tires, replaces brakes, changes filters and hoses, checks fluid levels, tunes engines, installs shock absorbers, and other preventive maintenance.
Facilitates workflow of vehicle and equipment repair in assigned parks and across the park system. Coordinates work with the Fleet Manager.
Completes repair and maintenance records reflecting work performed, parts used, problems encountered, labor costs, and other required information. Maintains an inventory of replacement parts and accessories.
Loads and unloads trucks. Trailers equipment to and from parks and repair facilities. Orders and picks up vehicle parts needed for maintenance.
Purchases parts and services, maintains purchasing card records.
Successfully completes all required paid manufacturer or vendor-provided training.
Exhibits regular and punctual attendance. Performs job duties in accordance with Great Parks (GP)’s policies, procedures, and performance expectations.
Works assigned schedule, exhibits regular and punctual attendance, and works outside of normal schedule as required.
Performs other job duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
An appropriate combination of education, training, course work, and experience may qualify an applicant to demonstrate required knowledge, skills, and abilities. An example of an acceptable qualification is:
High School Diploma or GED required
Minimum of 5 years’ experience in mechanical repair of gasoline and diesel engines.
Ability to document identity and employment eligibility within three (3) days of original appointment as a condition of employment in compliance with Immigration Reform and Control Act requirements.
LICENSE OR CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
ASE Certification required in at least 2 out of 8 categories of Automobile & Light Truck Repair (A Series; Certification Tests A1-A8). ASE-Certified Master Mechanic and EVT L-1 (Law Enforcement Vehicle Installation) certification required within 12 months of employment.
State motor vehicle operator’s license that meets current carrier guidelines. Successful completion of paid manufacturer or vendor-provided training after employment is required.
