Compost Coordinator

Green Umbrella is seeking a Compost Coordinator to coordinate and assist in the creation and management of medium scale (<500 sq ft) community composting and food waste drop off sites and associated activities within the City of Cincinnati. This is an opportunity for a passionate, motivated individual to play an important role in the development and execution of community composting and food waste collection, helping it evolve to the next level within the City and increasing the positive environmental impact. The position is in Cincinnati, Ohio, working out of Green Umbrella’s offices (central) and Camp Washington.

About The Common Orchard Project:

The Common Orchard Project works with communities to plant and maintain fruit trees throughout Cincinnati. We grow a large perennial farm and demonstration site in Camp Washington, assist in the growth of dozens of orchards all over Cincinnati, and conduct education workshops. Our goal is to increase local food production in neighborhoods and create better community cohesion through activating vacant space.

About the Position:

This position will work closely with the Director; Chris Smyth. They will work collaboratively with Common Orchard Project, Green Umbrella staff, City of Cincinnati Office of Environment and Sustainability staff, City Recreation Foundation staff, and community stakeholders and businesses for implementation of a United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) grant- Cincinnati Community Composting Collaborative.

The compost coordinator will work between 30 and 40 hours per week starting in May 2022 and lasting through the following year, with possible extension. This is a grant funded position through 2023 with possible extension. Compensation is commiserate with hours selected and experience to be between $16.85 and $19.23 per hour and is benefits eligible.

Qualifications:

  • To be successful in this role, we believe the ideal candidate will have the following
  • characteristics and experience.
  • Can develop and execute a clear program strategy and deliver on grant activities.
  • At least 2 years of proven experience in composting.
  • Capable of coaching gardeners on best practices for creating and managing
  • community composting sites and how to best determine the acceptance and
  • management of vegetative food waste at the sites
  • Ability to coordinate volunteers
  • Already have or be capable of developing relationships with current and potential
  • composters and various community stakeholders and businesses.
  • Excellent at prioritizing a variety of tasks and managing time.
  • Humble (in it for others/mission), hungry (strong work ethic, always ready to
  • contribute), and smart (understand people and how to interact with them).
  • Commitment to the mission and values of Green Umbrella and passionate about
  • the issues we work on.
  • Organized and willing to learn Asana project management.
  • Adaptable
  • Pragmatic optimist
  • Proficient at using appropriate software, including analyzing data to guide decision
  • Skilled at preparing financial and written reports and operational procedures.
  • Primary Responsibilities

  • Provide train the trainer compost/ food waste collection education with gardeners
  • Recruit, train and manage volunteers as needed
  • Assist with testing of compost and record keeping of data/results
  • Help coordinate delivery and dispersal of compost to community gardens and
  • participants of the City’s Urban Agriculture program
  • Collaborate with GU communications coordinator and program staff on
  • appropriate activities.
  • Provide data for identified reporting purposes and project evaluation

Primary Responsibilities
